Grand Family Reunion - 2008

The Grand Family Reunion will be held in Oklahoma City, OK
July 4 thru July 6 at the
Skirvin Hilton
e-mail ttahir3@trealtyok.com or bfranch2@msn.com

The Grand Family Reunion is comprised of five families - Metoyer, Goudeau, Ray, Dupre and LaCour.

The books, “Cane River” by Lalita Tademy and “The Forgotten People, Cain River’s Creoles of Color” written by Gary Mills, depicts the lives of our family ancestors Marie Teresa Coincoin and Pierre Metoyer, and tells how a former slave and a Frenchman fell in love and had eleven children. They were unable to marry because of church and state laws forbidding such a union. Pierre did not forsake his obligations to Marie Teresa and their children, so he gave her a piece of land.
She cultivated the land and made

enough money to buy all of her children and grandchildren out of slavery. She was also able to educate some of her children in Paris, France.
The home that she built is now an historical landmark in Melrose, Louisiana. We the descendants, try to maintain the heritage, beliefs and traditions that she handed down. She was a firm believer in God, family, and education.
